Our Catapult Olympics

by Sarah M., Mrs. Kling's Class

Hi, my name is Sarah M. I'm here to tell you all about my Catapult Olympics. Well, it all started with just some tools and materials like: wood, lumber, screws, screwdrivers, an awl, a couple of washers, and some hooks. First, we took one long piece of wood and measured it. Then, we made a couple of holes with an awl. We then took the two pieces of pegboard and stood them up against the two sides of the wood. Next, we put in three screws on each side, and screwed them down with the screwdriver. Then, we put on washers to make the screws tighter. After that, we took another long piece of wood and made a hole in the center of it. Next, we put a looooooong screw through the pegboards and the wood. After that, we screwed all the hooks in their places and tied a chain to one of the hooks. Then, we got a small plastic cup and screwed it on top of the wood.

I know you're anxious to know how it works now, and that's what I'm about to tell you. First, you get a rubber band and connect one end to a hook and the other end to a different hook. Then, you hook the chain to a different hook which makes it a trigger. Finally, you put a small plastic ball in the plastic cup. When you pull the trigger, the hook pulls out of the other hook connected to the wood. So, the wood flips forward and the ball flies out of the plastic cup and lands on the floor. That's how a catapult works.

Well, now about the catapult Olympics. We took our catapults to the multi-purpose room, and Mrs. Kling took a hula-hoop, a bicycle tire, and a pie tin. She put the hula-hoop down first, the bicycle tire in the center of the hula-hoop, and the tin in the center of the tire to make a target. If you shot the ball in the bowl it's worth 30 points, in the tire it's 20 points, and in the hula-hoop it's 10 points. You got two turns in each round. You had to shoot three times a minute on each turn. On our first turn, my partner and I got O points. Everyone was in the lead, but us. For the second round, they put the hula-hoop, the tire, and the tin on the wall, so it was even more difficult. On my first turn, in the second round, I got two 20's, and one 10. For my second turn, I got one 30, one 20, and one 10. The total for the whole event for me and my partner was 110. We won 2nd place! Everyone was very, very happy that day.
