Technology Self Assessment for Teachers

Please judge your level of use of the following types of tasks commonly performed with a computer. Please choose only one letter choice for each section.

1. Basic Computer Operation
a. _____ I do not use a computer.
b. _____ I can use the computer to run a few programs. It has little effect on either my work or my home life. There are times that I am somewhat uncomfortable using a computer.
c. _____ I can set up my computer and peripherals (such as printers, modems, scanners, etc...) and use accessories like the scrapbook, clock, etc...
d. _____ I can run more than one program at once. I can customize the way my computer and programs work. I feel confident enough to teach others some basic computer operations.


2. File Management
a. _____ I do not save documents I create using the computer.
b. _____ I save, but don’t always know where documents go. I don’t back up files.
c. _____ I have a filing system for organizing my files. I can locate my files quickly and reliably. I do back up my files.
d. _____ I can manage my files as above, and run disk optimizer and utility programs as needed as well.


3. Word Processing
a. _____ I do not use a word processor, and don’t really know how it could benefit me in my work with students.
b. _____ I occasionally use a word processor for simple documents.
c. _____ I use a word processor for nearly all of my professional work (memos, tests, worksheets, communications, etc...) I feel that using word processors has enhanced my work in a multitude of ways.
d. _____ I use word processors in the ways mentioned above, and also to support all stages of the writing process with my students.


4. Spreadsheet
a. _____ I do not use a spreadsheet, nor could I identify any uses or features that might benefit my work.
b. _____ I understand the uses of spreadsheet. I can create a simple spreadsheet which adds a column of numbers.
c. _____ I can create and use a spreadsheet that might include formulas, labels, or be used as a table of as the basis of a bar graph or pie chart.
d. _____ I use a spreadsheet for the above mentioned types of work, as well as teach these skills to my students, showing them their value in working with math/science data.


5. Database
a. _____ I do not use a database, nor could I identify any uses or features that might benefit my work.
b. _____ I understand the uses of database. I can use one to locate information, and add or delete data.
c. _____ I use databases to collect and analyze data. I can create a database
d. _____ I can use formulas to create summations of numerical data. I use databases for the above mentioned types of work, as well as teach these skills to my students, showing them their value in working with organizational, and math/science data.


6. Graphics
a. _____ I do not use graphics in my word processing or presentation type of work, or understand how graphics might enhance them.
b. _____ I can open, create, modify and place graphics into other types of documents.
c. _____ I can open, create, modify and place graphics in other documents in order to help clarify and amplify the message.
d. _____ I can use graphics in the above-mentioned ways, as well as use a digital or video camera in order to capture images. I can use a program such as PhotoShop™ to modify the appearance of images in advanced ways.

7. Internet
a. _____ I do not use a web browser (such as Netscape Navigator™ or Internet Explorer™). I have no idea how using the Internet might help me in my work or that of my students.
b. _____ I can use a web browser to view web pages and do simple searches for information.
c. _____ I am able to efficiently search for specific information as well as do complex searches of web sites and other Internet sources such as gopher sites and mail servers.
d. _____ I can do all of the above, as well as create my own web pages that serve as resources to others. These resource pages are well organized and include links to other sites.

8. E-mail
a. _____ I do not use E-mail, nor could I identify any uses or features of E-mail that might benefit my work.
b. _____ I understand the uses of E-mail. I send occasional messages and requests for information to others.
c. _____ I use E-mail to access professional information and participate in on-line discussions. I check my E-mail regularly.
d. _____ I do all of the above, as well as involve my students in similar activities where they can access info from experts in fields related to my students' study.

9. Video Production
a. _____ I have never used a video camera.
b. _____ I have used a video camera to make a simple video of my students working on an activity or performance.
c. _____ I have planned and created an original video production or coordinated the production of my students.
d. _____ I have planned, created, or coordinated the production of an original video and/or integrated it with other technologies (such as books, slides or a computer digitized clip).
