A Day in the Wilderness
A Day in the Wilderness
by David G.

From his Journal 1777

Today we started to move along The Wilderness Road. ItŐs December 18th. Some of us are moving in wagons, some on their horses, and others had to walk. I miss my aunts and friends. After a few miles we had to cross a river. The river was very deep and muddy. Everybody had to get off the wagons and horses because the river was so deep. We had to push the wagons. We used the horses to help pull them. After we crossed the river we had to cross some mountains. Many wagon wheels were broken. We heard some rattlesnakes shaking their tails. We decided to stay in the wagon for safety, then we fixed the wheels.

At last, we made it to the top of the mountains. It took lots of work. This was a very hard day. Daniel Boone, our leader, was not afraid, he is brave a man. Thunderstorms caused delays. Some Cherokee Indians attacked us on the way. Twenty people were killed. Kentucky is a long way Like I said, this was a very hard day. Many people turned around because of the Indians.
