Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky.
His religion is Liberal. He was 52 years old when he was elected President.
His years in the presidency were 1861-1865. His family moved many times.
For example, he moved from Kentucky to Indiana and then to Illinois.
Along the way he kept up with his studies. In the year 1834, he went
to a legislature and became a leader. Lincoln went to a law school
in Springfield. In 1855, Lincoln became candidate for the Senate.
He also joined the Republican Party. He ran for president against
Steven A. Douglas, a Democratic candidate. Lincoln won the election.
Lincoln once wanted to free slaves because he didn't want slaves to
be treated like half human and half animal. The slaves were sold
in the South. These slaves worked all day without getting paid.
One day, a slave escaped from the South and got his freedom in the North. His name
was Frederick Douglas. He escaped by using the Underground Railroad which was a path
to freedom. When he got to the North, he said, "I stole this head, these limbs from
my master and ran off with them."
After that occurred the South wanted to go to war. Lincoln picked Ulysses S. Grant
to be the general for the Union. The general of the of the Confederate Army was
General E. Lee. The Union's uniform color was blue, and the Confederacy's uniform
color was gray. Many slaves fought in the civil war. The Union won the War and
they freed the slaves.
