George Washington

The name of the first president I'm researching is George Washington. He was born on February 2, 1732 in the state of Virginia. His parents were planters who worked most of the days in the fields. George Washington's religion was called Episcopalian. Washington went to an elementary school in Popes Creek, Virginia. His favorite subject was arithmetic.

George Washington served 8 years as President. He promised to make the country better. George Washington led the Revolutionary War as General. The war started when the French were fighting Great Britain. This war was called The French and Indian War. Great Britain and the King of England, George III, passed a law in Parliament. This law was a tax on the Americans so Great Britain could get money to pay the British soldiers who fought in the French and Indian War. When Americans found out they were being taxed by the British, they started to boycott all the goods from Britain.

On March 1770, there was a fight with an American boy and a British Soldier in Boston. The crowd threw stuff at the soldier. Then more British came and fought. The British killed five colonists. That event was called the Boston Massacre. Then something else happened on December 16, 1773, when American Colonists got on British ships dressed like Indians and dumped tea into the ocean. That event was called The Boston Tea Party.

These events led to the Revolutionary War. General Washington helped his soldiers, the Minutemen. He trained them a lot. But many of them were killed during the war. The Americans won a battle at Trenton, New Jersey. They stole German supplies. Then Germany, Poland and France joined the war on the American's side. The first Frenchman who joined was Marquis de Lafayette. George Washington spent the winter at Valley Forge. His men left tracks of blood and were out of equipment. There they met with a German soldier named Baron Friedrich von Steuben. He helped train the Americans.

The last battle was in Yorktown, near the coast of Virginia. There General Cornwallis took the British Army. The Americans surrounded the Brits and there was no way out because the French Navy was blocking the sea. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781. The American Revolution was finally over. Great Britain and the United States signed a peace treaty. Then George Washington became President. His Vice President was John Adams. President Washington died on December 14, 1799.
