Desert Haiku

Armenia
By Tigran G., Ms. Ou's Class

My name is Tigran. I am nine years old. My birthday is on May 19th. I have two little sisters. Lucy is seven years old and Lisa is seven months old. Both my sisters and I are born in America and my parents are born in Armenia.

My parents say that Armenia is mostly like California. It has houses, the four regions, but most of the time the weather is cold. In the winter, it snows. In Armenia, they have over five hundred thousand people living there. Like here in the U.S. there are opportunities to make a lot of money if you work hard, but my parents wanted to move here because they think that it is a beautiful country and it is a free country.

The foods that we eat here are very different from Armenia. In Armenia we eat little pieces of Armenian pizzas, but it is only one slice at a time. First, you burn a small round bread, then you put some meat on it. Next, you put red pepper and then cook it for like twenty-five minutes in the stove and then it is ready to be eaten. There is also good food that you can eat, it is called tol-ma. First, you pick a small flat green leaf, then you get rice and crushed meat and put it in a row in the middle. Then you roll up the leaf and put it in the stove for forty minutes then take it out and eat it.

There are not too many tourist sites in Armenia. There are only many famous statues that we can see. In Armenia we usually take the train as our main way of transportation. And the highways here are so much wider than in Armenian. That is why every here has a car because it is easy to travel on the freeway to get from place to place. In Armenia it is very cold and it snows a lot in the wintertime and a lot of old and poor people get sick and die during the cold winters because they have no heating systems. Many people stay in there homes in the wintertime so they won't get sick.

My mom has lived here in the U.S. for about twenty four years and she likes it here more then Armenia because it can get hot here in the U.S. She loves the peaceful coasts and beautiful beaches. California is warm and peaceful and it has fine houses and cozy beds and cozy couches. She likes it because it has a lot more space than Armenia. Also it has faster cars and more funner things to do and of course the weather is perfect. But my mom and dad kind of miss their friends in Armenia, but some of them came here to America with my parents. We live in a free country. My parents have already traveled to many different places. They went to Hawaii, London, Paris, and France for their honeymoon. They had a wonderful time going to all those interesting places. They say that they might take me someday.
